SANGUEM: Fourteen residents of Muslimwada in Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) jurisdiction on Wednesday tested positive for COVID-19 causing panic in the area.
The area located 100 metres from the town has several government offices and the municipal market.
In addition to these fourteen cases, another person tested positive from Kurpem ward of Wadem Curdi Panchayat.
As the news of the 14 persons from Muslimwada testing positive for the infection spread, there were chaos and panic in the municipal area as the locals claimed that some of the above infected persons were seen in the town a couple of days ago.
Incidentally, the COVID situation in Sanguem taluka was zero a fortnight ago. However, the sudden surge in the positive cases in Muslimwada has been attributed to the death of COVID-19 patient from the area whose report came a day after his death.
According to available information, it is learnt that some persons tested positive after attending his funeral.
Of 50 swab samples which were collected on Tuesday, 14 tested positive on Wednesday.
The Sanguem PHC authorities collected more swab samples on Wednesday, the reports are awaited.
Till date, the taluka has 19 positive cases.
Meanwhile Sanguem town residents have urged the authorities to curtail the movement of people in the town area as some were found moving in the town.
