Sao Jose de Areal Beat Cuncolim Union on Penalties to Enter Chandor Seamen Trophy Quarterfinals

Sao Jose de Areal edged past Cuncolim Union 6-5 via a penalty shootout to book their place in the quarterfinals of the 51st Chandor Seamen Trophy at the Church Ground, Chandor, on Friday.

The match ended 2-2 after regulation time, forcing a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

Cuncolim Union took an early lead through Wilson Fernandes, who scored in the sixth minute. Sao Jose de Areal responded six minutes later, with Josley Gomes finding the equaliser in the 12th minute.

Areal moved ahead in the second half when Azilton Viegas scored in the 36th minute. However, Cuncolim Union fought back and Daulat Dessai restored parity in the 46th minute to make it 2-2 and send the match into a penalty shootout.

Sao Jose de Areal proved more composed from the spot, converting their chances to secure a 6-5 victory and advance to the quarterfinals.

Bersal Viegas of Sao Jose de Areal was named Player of the Match. The award was presented by GFA member Petwin Fijardo.
