MARGAO: Frustrated by the lack of action from government authorities, the villagers of São José de Areal have called for the urgent implementation of a proper waste management system at the Margao Industrial Estate. In addition to waste management, residents have raised concerns over the absence of adequate toilet facilities, which have led to health risks in the area. They also pointed out that the lack of a designated terminus has exacerbated traffic problems, with trucks often parked along the roadside, creating obstructions and further complicating the situation.

The villagers are also dealing with contaminated water flowing into open areas and fields, which has made it difficult for farmers to continue their work. The contamination has resulted in significant hardships for the community, particularly affecting their agricultural activities.
Despite these ongoing issues, the villagers are still awaiting a response from officials from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) who conducted an inspection on Wednesday and collected samples of the odorous water. Local MLA Cruz Silva expressed concern over the recurring issue of contaminated water flowing into fields, highlighting the inefficiency of the authorities’ response. He pointed out that inspections only occur after residents raise concerns, and while samples are taken, no concrete action or measures have been implemented to address the problem.
Fredy Travaso, a local activist, voiced his concern about the lack of proper toilet facilities at the industrial estate, describing it as a major health hazard. He also expressed frustration over the absence of a terminal at the Margao Industrial Estate, noting that heavy vehicles often park on the roadside, causing traffic disruptions.
Peter Viegas, another villager, demanded the establishment of a proper waste management system, pointing out that the lack of such a system has led to inconvenience for the local residents. He emphasised that the authorities must take the issue seriously and address the problems through effective solutions, rather than relying solely on inspections.
