PONDA: Crematorium issues dominated the gram sabhas of Marcaim, Savoi-Verem and Borim. In Savoi-Verem, Sarpanch Vinay Naik urged the members to contribute to buy wood and other items required for final rites at the crematorium. The members immediately made donations ranging from Rs 1,000 to 5,000. Rs 55,000 was collected on the spot. A committee to run the crematorium was later formed, and the sarpanch was made a member.
Locals also demanded that a traffic regulation board be immediately installed to prevent sand transportation during school hours and that a tax be imposed on sand transportation to generate revenue for the village.
In Borim, the citizens were irked over the delay in constructing a crematorium at Deulwada. Sarpanch Sanjay Gavde said the delay was due to a dispute over land acquired for the crematorium. The panchayat said it would discuss the matter with the Borim Comunidade and the Public Works Department. He added that a playground for the village had been approved and it would be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore.
At the Marcaim gram sabha, a resolution was passed regarding the construction of a crematorium by Marcaim Dhazan Samaj as shown in the regional plan. The panchayat’s poor financial condition and lack of grants were also discussed.
