CANACONA: Thousands of school students will have to answer their exams during the traditional Shigmo festivities which get underway almost simultaneously in Canacona taluka.
According to reports, exams in all the schools in the State for the students of Std 5 to 9 starts from March 18, while two days later, celebrations begin for traditional Shigmo in the taluka.
This has worried many parents, especially those who observe the Shigmo rituals as part of their religious belief, making it compulsory for many of their wardens to stay awake at nights.
According to few parents, many of them are left to face similar situations in the past as well and called upon the government to correct this anomaly of fixing school academic calendar in tandem with the cultural time table of the State or at-least taking into account such rituals in many parts of the State.
It is learnt that since SSC board exams starts on March 28, it has compulsive for certain schools to make their premises available well before to conduct the board exams.
Another major problem anticipated by many parents is that the school exams ends on March 25 and Holi is celebrated on the same day, a day observed by most Hindus in a grand way attending several rituals and traditions.
According to sources, most schools completes 195 instructional days, the minimum required to conduct examinations, well before commencement of exams, even though April 23 is the last working day for the schools.
“Even though government is technically right to conduct school examinations as scheduled this academic year, it should apply its mind to fix examinations taking into consideration the cultural celebrations programmes in the State,” said a member of the teaching community in the taluka.
