PORVORIM: Confusion has prevailed over elections to the Serula Comunidade on Sunday, with gauncars alleging that the North Goa Collector has failed to intimate the date for filing of nominations.
The State government had announced that the election to the office bearers of Serula Comunidade would be held on January 20. However, since the North Goa Collector has not intimated the date of filing the nominations, the gauncars are worried whether the election will be held or not.
“Some office bearers of Serula Comunidade have started canvassing for another consecutive term. As per Rule 50 of Code of Comunidade, the present committee members cannot re-contest the election without a gap of three years,” claimed a gauncar.
“If a political party tries to nominate its candidates on the committee, we will fight tooth and nail. Gauncars want peaceful election as per the code of conduct to run the affairs of the comunidade without any interference from vested interests, who are not part of the comunidade,” added the gauncar.
Administrator of Comunidades, Mapusa, Irene Sequeira stated that she has already received approval from the Revenue Department to conduct election on January 20 at 10.30 am.
“The election will be held by open voting, by raising of hands, as per code of comunidade and hence there is not need to file nominations. The State government has made necessary arrangement to conduct the election on scheduled date,” said Sequeira.
