NGT rejects plea to stop work on Saligao garbage treatment Plant

PANJIM: The National Green Tribunal Friday rejected Goa Foundation and Saligao Civic and Consumer Cell (SCCC) plea to stop ongoing work at Saligao Garbage Treatment Plant.
Arguing for the State in the tribunal, Goa Advocate General Atmaram N S Nadkarni vehemently opposed any interference in the project contending that this project is for greater public interest in pursuance of the Supreme Court and High Court orders and that the government has assured the superior courts to set up these garbage treatment plants to resolve garbage problem in Goa.
Convinced of the Advocate General’s arguments, NGT decided to hear the matter finally and placed it on February 6, declining to entertain any interim prayers.
Goa Foundation and SCCC had alleged that the environment clearance had been granted to the project before the environment impact assessment report had been given. They had also alleged that the work had commenced at the site before the EC could be obtained and that no public consultation had been held.
