PONDA: The latest developments have come as a setback to MGP as BJP could retain both the Chairperson and Deputy post of the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC), after a three-time Congress councillor joined BJP.

Presently, the MGP backed Ameena Naik, PMC Deputy Chairperson is facing a no-confidence motion after eight BJP backed councillors filed the same.
It may be recalled that when Ameena was elected as the Deputy by getting 8 votes as opposed to the seven votes against her, it appeared that MGP was having the majority in the council.
However with the latest move, BJP gains an edge given that their backed candidate Vishwanath Dalvi was elected unopposed as chairperson last month.
Recently, BJP has seen opposition PMC councillors join its party too strengthening its position.
It mabe recalled that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently said that the lotus (BJP symbol) will bloom in the 2020 assembly elections and hinted that the party is confident of winning the Ponda seat.
It is to be noted that besides the PMC, there are also the Curti and Khandepar panchayats in Ponda constituency and BJP is making its move here as well to take political control of these areas.
Against that backdrop, MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar said that MGP is not all impacted by these latest developments. He further added that if councillors who joined BJP contests elections, then MGP supporters will ensure their defeat.
