MARGAO: Trawler owners from Cutbona have claimed that the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) should be raking in a much higher amount as sopo tax at its wholesale fish market in Fatorda.
Savio D’Silva, South Goa Congress President and a leader of the trawler owners union at Cutbona, said they were shocked to hear that SGPDA is only getting around Rs 43,000 in sop collection from the wholesale fish market per day, while estimating that the revenue should be as high as Rs 1 lakh a day, given the number of fish loading vehicles carrying out business at the market. He also questioned if the market is being monitored properly in the wee hours of the morning, around 3 am, when the business is at its peak.

When asked about the sopo collection being handled by the SGPDA themselves presently, officials said the tendering process is presently underway, following which the contract will be awarded.
