PANJIM: Goa Legislative Assembly’s Deputy Speaker Anant Shet resigned from the post on Monday to file his nomination for the Speaker’s post.
He had earlier chaired the first day of the winter session that started with Goa Governor Mridula Sinha’s address to the House, passing of condolence motion and other business.
The election for Speaker’s post, scheduled for Tuesday morning, will see Congress’ Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco also vying for the post. He is backed by the Third Front, comprising Independents Vijai Sardesai, Rohan Khaunte and Naresh Sawal. Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho, who has shown his inclination towards the BJP, will be pro-tem Speaker during the election process.
The ruling benches claim to have the support of 25 legislators paving the way for the Mayem MLA to be elected Speaker.
The post for speaker fell vacant after Rajendra Arlekar was inducted into the State cabinet as Panchayats Minister last year. The election for the post of Deputy Speaker will be held on January 14 with BJP legislator Vishnu Surya Wagh as the government’s candidate.
