BICHOLIM: Farmers from Shirgao have submitted a memorandum to Bicholim mamlatdar demanding compensation for destruction of their farms due to mining silt.
The farmers have demanded that compensation be paid to them by January 15, failing which they have threatened to launch an agitation.
The villagers claim that the mining companies have not paid them compensation since the last five years despite them being responsible for the destruction of the fields. “Repeated requests for compensation didn’t fructify,” the villagers complained.
Villagers have also requested the mamlatdar to convene a meeting them and the mining company officials on December 31 to discuss the issue. The memorandum was presented under the guidance of Shirgao Farmers Association President Mahadev Gaonkar.
