India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has finally addressed his exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad. The 26-year-old batter, who served as vice-captain during the Asia Cup 2025, was overlooked by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel following an underwhelming run in T20Is. Gill featured in 15 T20Is in 2025, scoring 219 runs at an average of 24.25 with a strike rate of 137.26, without registering a single half-century.
Despite criticism from fans over his struggles in the shortest format and India’s shift away from an aggressive approach, Gill chose not to dwell on the setback. Speaking ahead of the first ODI against New Zealand, he said he respects the selectors’ call and wished the team well for the tournament, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
