MARGAO: Government’s circular mandating the Panchayats to display their official board names and signages in Konkani Devnagiri and Marathi in addition to English found rejection at the gram sabha of Dramapur-Sirlim village Panchayat.
Gram sabha members vehemently objected to the circular asking the Panchayat to display the names also in Marathi, with the meeting adopting a resolution demanding that the circular on the official board names and signages should be revised and restricted only to Konkani and English.
The resolution was tabled by Panch member Domnick Noronha, who contended that there are places in neighbouring states like Sawantwadi in Maharashtra and Karwar, Yeallapur, Hubli and Mangalore in Karnataka that speak Konkani, but the States are patronised by their own State languages.
“Goa is a small State and we have different religions and traditions followed in a very harmonious manner throughout the State. Maharashtra should be proud of their State language and has gone to the extent of changing all signages in Marathi, adding that Goa should be proud of having Konkani as the only official language as we do not need to copy our language status from other States”, Domnick said in his resolution.
Meanwhile, the meeting adopted a resolution tabled by Israel Gomindes demanding that the Power department despatch bills every two months on a regular basis. During discussions, members pointed out that delay in serving the bills more than two months puts a financial strain on families. It was finally resolved to write to the Power department to send the bills every two months.
The gram sabha also adopted a resolution tabled by gram sabha member Wilson Viegas to write to the government to order a probe on false claims made by some beneficiaries to avail benefit of the Rs 1,000 dole for women.
