MAPUSA: The villagers of Tivim-Sirsaim have firmly opposed the location of the MRF (material recovery facility) shed due to its close proximity to the local spring bordering the Assonora village panchayat.
The MRF shed project has been proposed by the Assonora panchayat and the Sirsaimkars claim that it will pollute and destroy the natural spring, which is situated about 300 metres away from the MRF shed.
They demanded to shift the MRF project as it was being constructed in the wrong survey number. It was earlier proposed in survey number 93/1 and it is now being built in survey No. 19/1 which falls in the jurisdiction of Sirsaim village panchayat as per the report from the Directorate of Settlement and Land Records, Panjim.
Villagers claimed that the matter has been brought to the notice of the Assonora village panchayat and informed that the Sirsaim panchayat has issued a stop work order. However, Assonora panchayat has proceeded with the construction work which is nearing completion.
Sirsaim villagers fear that the segregation and the leachate of garbage will destroy the age-old natural spring and leave a lasting impact on the environment.
