MAPUSA: The Socorro Village Panchayat adopted a resolution to preserve the “eco-sensitive” areas in the village at a biodiversity meeting held on Friday.
Savio Fonseca and his panel gave a detailed presentation on the flora and fauna of Socorro Plateau. Fonseca is a core committee member of Biodiversity Action Network of Goa.
He walked panchayat members through the biodiversity of the plateau, giving information about the various migratory birds that visit the plateau during various seasons.
He also spoke about the various snake species that the plateau is home to and showed them a plethora of fungi that grow there.
He even highlighted evidence of their heritage including the ancient tracks of bullock carts etched in laterite, remnants of Davornem structure and other finer details. An advisory committee was appointed at the meeting comprising of namely Soter D’Souza, Dinesh Bhobe, Harish Ambre and Uric Mascarenhas.
Socorro Biodiversity Committee Chairperson Shital Arolkar said, “Savio has written a book on the various species of birds of Goa. He presented to the panchayat members the data he has collected on this plateau.”
Through his presentation we learnt about our flora and fauna of which we were unaware. We will try our best to preserve our biodiversity on this plateau,” she added.
A member of the Biodiversity Action Network of Goa Anagha Fernandes informed that a presentation was organised at the panchayat creating awareness on the biodiversity of the Socorro Plateau.
“We have collected data over the last 10 years. On the basis of which we gave a presentation. Shortly, a walk or rather field trip to update our information on this plateau will be held,” Fernandes said.
The members resolved to maintain the biodiversity of the plateau.
The meeting was attended by Socorro Sarpanch Sandip Vazarkar, Deputy Sarpanch Dipali Satardekar, panchas Ditosa Lobo, Anil Pednekar, Kirti Kudnekar and Sandip Manjrekar.
