PORVORIM: Residents of Socorro have raised strong objections to mega housing projects, which are coming up in the village and have demanded that the panchayat should not grant permission to new projects unless and until infrastructure is set in place.
Raising the issue during the gram sabha on Sunday, Michael Rodrigues said a huge mega project of 500 flats is scheduled to come up in the village.
“The existing infrastructure is overloaded and the residents are facing acute shortage of water, frequent disruption of power supply and the panchayat is finding it difficult to solve the garbage problem. Under such circumstances, it will not be advisable to grant permission to mega housing projects in Socorro,” said Rodrigues.
Joshua D’Mello said under the garb of road widening and housing project, trees are cut in large numbers. “The panchayat should not encourage cutting of trees and should preserve the environment of the village,” said D’Mello.
Uric Menezes sought to know how the panchayat granted permission for a commercial construction in the village without submission of Sanad and ownership documents by the party. The panchayat members could not give a satisfactory answer to the question.
Issues of construction of drainage, speed breakers and streetlights were also discussed during the gram sabha.
Earlier, Socorro Sarpanch Sonia Pednekar welcomed the villagers, while Panchayat
Secretary Chetan Shirodkar read the minutes of the previous gram sabha.
