PANJIM: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has cancelled her visit to Goa at the backdrop of havoc caused due to gusty winds and rains in Sattari and Bicholim talukas on Friday. She was supposed to address a massive rally at Panjim Gymkhana on April 8, wherein Goa Congress expected at least 25,000 participation.
“We briefed her about the damages caused due to rainfall and winds in Sattari and Bicholim after which she decided to call off her visit. From around 25,000 attendees we expected, around 5,000 were from these two talukas…” GPCC President John Fernandes told Herald. “I think it is a wise decision and it also sends a message that she cares for the people of Goa,” he said further.
One person had died, several houses were damaged and trees uprooted. The party workers who were preparing for the meeting are expected to get back to campaigning.
Central observer Siddhart Patil was also in Goa to oversee the arrangement.
