MARGAO: The Sonsoddo impasse is expected to get worse in the coming days, as the likelihood of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) being forced to pay Rs 1 lakh per day to Fomento Green, for an indefinite period, looms large.
Meanwhile, an official of Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) on Tuesday inspected the plant to take stock of its working.
When asked about his inspection, the GWMC official said that he was at the Sonsoddo to have a look around the plant.
Be that as it may, the court has sought a report of the sample testing of the garbage lying inside the Sonsoddo plant, when the case filed by Fomento comes up for hearing in on February 6.
Both the Fomento and Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) have reportedly sent samples to the same lab for testing. However, while the report on the sample sent by GSPCB has still not arrived, the report sought by Fomento has been received. In the absence of the report, the MMC is likely to face tough questions in the court.
So far, the municipality has paid nearly Rs 1.75 crore under the Rs 1 lakh per day agreement to Fomento. However, the municipality does not know what Fomento is doing with the garbage, which is piling up at the entrance of the plant and there is no additional place to store it now.
Municipal officials are worried that the MMC may have to, indefinitely, pay Rs 1 lakh per day to Fomento and also would be forced to clear the plant as they officials are regularly facing dressing down in court.
The government too is not coming out with its version to give clarity to the issue. If the impasse continues the garbage problem of Margao may go out of hand.
