When Manohar Parrikar descended on the commercial capital soon after assuming office, he gave his nod for the capping of the Sonsodo dump yard on the lines of Gorai-Mumbai and assured all support for the waste treatment plant. Till date, however, the landfill site is not in place because of the delay by the Town and Country Planning Department to grant NOC for hill cutting. And, the proposed capping of Sonsodo seems buried under the dump yard. Sources in the Margao Municipal Council said that one cannot imagine capping of the waste dump without financial support from the government as the project is estimated to cost Rs 7.2 crore, which the cash-starved MMC can ill afford. Hopes were raised recently that Sonsodo will fall in place after the outgoing Chief Minister descended at the site with TCP and other officials in tow. Decisions taken by Parrikar are awaiting implementation.
