MARGAO: South Goa witnessed 70 cases of voluntarily causing grievous hurt or causing hurt with weapons in 2024.

According to information obtained from the police, 69 have been detected, and most have been chargesheeted in court. In comparison, police stations in South Goa had registered 80 cases of hurt in 2023, of which 79 were detected and chargesheeted. In 2022, 82 cases were registered, with 77 of them detected.
A senior police officer explained that in offences related to causing hurt, the injured person is sent to a hospital for medical examination, and the medical report obtained plays a crucial role in the investigation. “When a complaint of hurt is registered at a police station, the injured person undergoes a medical examination, and based on the medical report, an offence is registered,” the officer said.
Assault cases typically include offences such as causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons, causing hurt to extort property or to constrain an illegal act, causing hurt by means of poison, causing hurt to extort a confession, or to compel the restoration of property, deterring a public servant from duty, causing hurt on provocation, and causing hurt by an act that endangers life or safety of others.
Margao advocate Vinay Patker explained that the legal provision under which an accused is booked determines the punishment for voluntarily causing hurt. “As per the law, except in cases covered under Section 334, whoever voluntarily causes hurt shall be punished with imprisonment for a term extending up to one year, or with a fine of up to Rs 1,000, or both,” he said.
