MARGAO: With barely nine months left of their term, the Zilla Panchayat members of South Goa are gearing up for elections was evident and following various complaints it was decided to meet the chief minister to impress upon him to release the balance funds.
ZP Chairman Navnath Naik disclosed that they have not yet received Rs 1 crore of the Rs 13.50 crore that was sanctioned during the last financial year while this year no funds have been sanctioned at all. Earlier, various members raised questions about the works not being sanctioned in their constituencies.
“Works are not sanctioned due to non-availability of funds and we shall be forced to go to the people and tell them that we have not been able to do the works that we had promised,” chorused many ZP members with some of them naming specific cases that needed to be done.
“We shall meet the chief minister next week and raise this matter with him as during the monsoons not much work will be done but at least once the monsoons are over work can start,” Navnath said.
Sonsoddo: The Zilla Panchayat adopted Curtorim representative Moreno Rebello’s proposal that since Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation will be taking over the management of Sonsoddo garbage site, garbage from neighbouring villages like Curtorim and Sao Jose de Areal be also accepted at the site.
“The people of these two villages face the greatest hardship due to Sonsoddo and Curtorim was totally under the smoke during the latest fire that engulfed Sonsoddo and hence residents of these villages have to be given some leeway at Sonsoddo,” Moreno argued.
Dnyaneshwar Naik’s proposal to repair the markets in villages that are in bad shape was also accepted by the ZP member along with Navnath’s proposal to repair the bridge that has collapsed in his constituency.
GoaMiles: The ZP resolved that people should not be put to any hardship and whoever is offering taxi service should not overcharge the passengers.
