VASCO: Wholesale fish vendors from Vasco suggested that fish vendors from fish market should also compete with them by selling fish by weight on a scale at reasonable prices. This suggestion came from the wholesalers after MMC issued notices asking them to stop selling of fish as per the condition put up by the fish vendors.
On Tuesday, wholesalers from Vasco refused to stop selling of fish in port town. One lady wholesaler said that they are into fishing business since many years.

“The unloading and selling of fish was taking place at my place before even the fish market came into existence,” she said on condition of anonymity.
“We have our own canoes and the catch is also more, of such as Kingfish, etc. If excess fish is caught then what should we do about it? Why we are being stopped from doing our business and outsiders are given business opportunities in Port town,” she questioned.
Another wholesaler said that he belongs to fishermen community and owns around four canoes. “The catch of fish also goes into tonnes, which we supply to hotels and excess is sent to Margao. Some people come to buy fish at our home so we give them,” he said.
Another wholesaler, Rupesh, said that he is not against anyone and everyone is doing business for their bread and butter. Wholesalers and the fish vendors from market buy fish from canoes, boats and sell to customers. “The only difference between us is that wholesalers sell fish on a scale at reasonable prices whereas fish vendors from market sell fish on share basis.”
On Monday evening, Mormugao Municipal Council issued notices to fish wholesalers asking them to stop selling of fish in municipal area. This was done as per the demands made by the fish market vendors of Vasco as they have put this up as a condition to shift in the new market shed.
