PANJIM/PONDA/SATTARI/: People visiting Patto in Panjim were left inconvenienced on Tuesday due to the flood-like situation in the area that houses various private and government offices.
Even the people working in such offices complained about how difficult it was for them to get to the buildings they work in, as the entire area was waterlogged on Tuesday.
The Selaulim dam started overflowing from its crest early Tuesday morning. The Water Resources Department (WRD) Div- X Pajimol Sanguem issued a statement stating that the Selaulim Dam reservoir is full and the spill over has started at 6.00 am. The overflowing generally occurs around mid-July and lasts till November every year. The dam’s unique ‘duckbill’ spillway lets out a maximum flood discharge of 1,450 cubic metres per second. The dam’s full reservoir level (FRL) is 41.15m. Half the water from the dam is used for irrigation and the remaining for domestic and industrial purposes.
In one of the incidents at Ponda a huge jackfruit tree collapsed on Bhanudas Govind Naik’s house in Madlawada-Dhavlim causing major damages to the mud house.
The young girl in the house after hearing noise of the tree felling luckily rushed out of house and escaped unhurt.
Heavy rainfall over the past three days has caused severe damage across Sattari taluka.
The Mhadei River and its tributaries in Sattari have begun to over flow.
This over flowing river water has entered into the agriculture fields and has damaged the banana, areca nut, coconut trees and other agricultural crops.
Due to the continuous downpour, the recently constructed Chorla Ghat road has been washed away resulting in potholes, due to which the travellers are facing the hardship.
A house in Pissurlem village also collapsed.
Due to heavy rains, landslide incident occurred at Kerya-Khandepar, adjacent to Ponda-Belgaum National Highway, on Tuesday.
Following the incident in the morning, the locals fear that the trees located atop the hill, due to loosening of soil, are likely to come crashing down on the highway and cause disaster.
