“The tenure of any VC is five years and in the present case, Dr Shetye has completed only three years. The government therefore decided to allow him to complete five years by in-principle approving a two-year extension,” Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar told Herald.
“The final decision will be taken by the Chancellor. We have placed our recommendation,” Parsekar added, ruling out rumours that Shetye had approached government seeking extension.
The government has also suggested amending the GU statutes to give a compulsory five year term to VCs and increasing the age to 70 years. In this regard the GU Academic Council has been asked to make the necessary amendment and place it before the Chancellor for approval.
“Although we have recommended necessary amendments, this does not mean Shetye will be allowed to serve till 70 years. Once he completes the five-year term, another VC will be appointed,” Parsekar clarified.
The chief minister cited the example of some professional institutes increasing the retirement age to 70 years. “Higher educational institutes like IITs have increased the age limit. Moreover, Dr Shetye has done a good job and has done justice to the education system,” he said.
