MAPUSA: Verla Canca Panchayat on Saturday warned hawkers of strict action if they continue to carry out hawking along roadside.
It is learnt that number of locals as well as non-Goans have been conducting illegal business along the roadside in the village thereby affecting the smooth flow of traffic.
On Saturday, sarpanch Milton Marques along with panchas and panchayat secretary visited the site and warned the hawkers.
Sarpanch gave the hawkers a day’s time to remove their stalls failing which the panchayat threatened to confiscate their goods.
It is learnt that consumers stop and even park their vehicles on the road to buy goods from the hawkers thereby affecting the smooth flow of traffic.
The sarpanch said, “These hawkers have been told several times to stop hawking along the road. Even notices were served but these hawkers have continued with their business. If we remove them in the morning by evening they are back. We allowed these people to do business by sitting on roadside during the lockdown, as the markets were closed. But now since the markets have opened, roadside hawking cannot be allowed”.
“This road will be widened and dividers will be installed for the smooth flow of traffic due to which hawking cannot be allowed here. Panchayat secretary will maintain a vigil at the spot. We have given them a day’s time to clear the stalls and if they fail to remove them, then from tomorrow the panchayat will start confiscating their stock”, Milton warned.
