CANACONA: Stray cattle squatting and ambling right in the middle of the road has been a regular feature along the National Highway at various places in Canacona, Balli and Panzorconi.
The outcome of this bovine rendezvous has been perilous for humans using the road, resulting in numerous accidents, many of which are fatal, resulting in loss of life and damage to vehicles, not forgetting the harm to the animals. For a long time now, motorists commuting along the National Highway between Polem and Margao have been complaining about the lethargic attitude of the authorities concerned for failing to install signages warning of dangers these strays pose along the NH.
Speaking to Herald, Nishant Prabhudesai Loliem-Polem Ward No. 2 panch said, “At least at 10 places on NH in Loliem-Polem cattle are seen disrupting smooth flow of traffic and cause accidents regularly. While travelling to Margao there are stretches in Canacona and Cuncolim areas where cattle are seen in the middle of the NH causing hardship to the commuters”.
Denis Fernandes, a commuter says, “It’s high time that some NGO or Govt authorities wake up to the hazards due to this stray cattle and comes up with a permanent solution.”
