OLD GOA: Stating that there was lack of oxygen inside the sewage treatment plant, fireman Hawaldar Dnyaneshwar Sawant said it could have led to suffocation of the workers, which resulted in their death.
“A pump was used to pump out the sewage water,” Sawant noted while stating that this also resulted in pumping out of oxygen from the STP, resulting in production of more carbon dioxide.
“Under the ground, there is always less oxygen and anyone going underground should first check whether there is oxygen inside,” he said while stating that one can light a piece of paper and throw it in the septic tank or a well, as the case maybe, to ascertain the presence of oxygen. “If there is oxygen, the paper will completely burn while if there is lack of oxygen, the flame will die out,” Sawant further added.
“If the said technique was used in this case, it would have been ascertained that there is lack of oxygen and it is dangerous to go inside,” he said.
Sawant further said the owner should have taken expert help for undertaking the cleaning work of the STP.
