Margao Municipal Council may become the first Civic body to have surveillance cameras to keep a track on the employees, informed Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat, as he made his presence felt in the corridors of the Margao Municipality on Wednesday in a bid to streamline the Municipal administration.
“I have told the Chief Secretary to appoint the Director of Printing and Stationary N D Agrawal to implement surveillance cameras in the Collectorate, RTO and Municipalities. As far as the Municipalities are concerned, work of installing the cameras will start with the Margao Municipal Council”, Kamat said, after a closed door meeting the Chairperson Savio Coutinho, Chief Officer Y B Tawde and others.
The Chief Minister he has issued clear-cut instructions to the Civic body to work out a mechanism wherein citizens can get their work done in a time bound manner. “They have assured to get back to me within two days on the mechanism they intend to implement in the civic body”, he said.
Asked whether he has made his presence felt in the civic body following complaints from the public, the Chief Minister said he has decided to concentrate more on Hospicio and Margao Municipal Council where the citizens are directly connected with the administration.
When his attention was drawn to the fact that the bio-metric finger scan reader is lying idle in the Margao Municipality since the last three years, Kamat said his priority now is to install the surveillance cameras. “The entire state is moving in that direction. These cameras will be made compulsory”, he added.
The Chief Minster said he would not mind if the Margao Civic body appoints a Public Relations Officer a la Hospicio to attend to the citizens. He made this statement when his attention was drawn to the absence of any staff at the reception counter during his visit.
Earlier, the Chief Minister took a round of the technical section and also interacted with the citizens to understand problems faced by the common man.
He directed the MMC CO to work out a system to ensure that correspondence received at the reception is forwarded to the dealing hand the same day.
