PANJIM: Stating that corporation will float expression of interest (EoI) to select contractor for treating wet waste, Minister for Waste Management Michael Lobo said that ever since the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) started bio-remediation of legacy waste, around 24,000 tonnes of waste has been treated and remaining would be completed in a year.
Lobo was speaking after the High Powered Committee meeting at the Secretariat, which was attended by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Puja Naik amongst others.
“Currently, the corporation is treating legacy waste at Sonsoddo. The corporation has already started the work of remediation. A total of 24,000 tonnes of waste have already been treated. MMC has also given us the place to store the treated waste,” he said.
He said, “The remaining waste will be treated within a year.”
“The idea is to treat maximum waste before the monsoons,” he added.
Earlier, Goa Forward Party President and Fatorda MLA Vijai was critical of government’s attitude towards resolving Sonsoddo issue.
“The Fatorda MLA has to have patience. We will soon appoint a contractor to treat 30-35 tonnes of wet waste that arrives at Sonsoddo,” Lobo said.
He said that the SWMC will float expression of interest to select a contractor for treating wet waste.
Sardesai, on the other hand, has accused the government of adopting delaying tactics. Sardesai said that he was not satisfied with the outcome of the meeting which has decided to form the Committee.
