CALANGUTE: Hotel Goan Heritage (unit of Gulf Goans Hotels,) has announced scholarships for the academic year 2013-2014 for the top rankers of HSSC examination of Calangute village in science, arts and commerce. The top rankers should submit their applications with the certified copy of mark sheet and proof of Goan identity addressed to the General Manager, Hotel Goan Heritage, Gaura Vaddo, Calangute, by July 15.

CURCHOREM: Assuring to streamline power supply in the State, Power Minister Milind Naik said the government is considering underground cabling to avoid problem of disruption of power supply due to uprooting and falling of trees on the cables. Naik was addressing the sarpanchas and panchayat members of seven panchayats in Sanvordem constituency at Colsoi-Dabal on Saturday. MLA Ganesh Gaonkar was also present along with chief engineer S Lekshaman, superintendent engineer N N Reddy and assistant engineer S Salvi. “Efforts will be made to obtain funds from the Central government to undertake the 

underground cabling,” said Naik.

CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has requested Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to petition the Central government for an additional train to transport pilgrims from Goa to attend the forthcoming novena and feast at Vailankanni in Tamil Nadu. Following demands of residents from the Calangute-Candolim area, Lobo sent a letter to Parrikar and requested him to facilitate the pilgrims attending the novena beginning on August 29 and the feast of Our Lady of Vailankanni on September 8. Lobo hoped that the chief minister would pursue the matter with the Centre to avoid disappointment for thousands of Goan pilgrims planning to visit Vailankanni.

VALPOI: The Confederation of All India Rail Users Association (Konkan and Goa region) has petitioned Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda to double the existing single line of Konkan Railway and to increase the frequency of the Rajdhani Express.

In a memorandum, the Association President K J Joy has also demanded a halt of trains at Tivim station including Ernakulam-Pune Express (via Panvel), CSTM-Mangalore Express, HAPA-Tiruneveli Express and Matsya Gandha Express. The Association has also demanded a halt of the Nizamuddin-Thiruvananthapuram, Kochuveli-Amristar and Kochuveli-Bikaner trains at the Karmali station. The Association has also demanded that the weekly Madgaon-Ernakulam Super Fast train be made to ply thrice a week. A separate memorandum was also submitted to Union Tourism Minister Shripad Naik.

MAYEM: Santosh Saraf was unanimously elected as sarpanch of Mulgao Panchayat.

It may be recalled that the post of sarpanch fell vacant after former sarpanch Sheetal Rewadkar resigned a few months ago. As Saraf was the lone candidate to file a nomination to the post of sarpanch, he was declared elected unopposed by extension officer Suryaji Rane. Other panchas present for the meeting included Sheetal Rewadkar, Sruti Ghatwal, Datta Morajkar, Govind Mandrekar and Prakash Arondekar. 

CANACONA: Prashant Kholkar was elected as president of Sarvajanik Ganeshosthav Mandal, Matvemol-Khola, for 2014-15. The other office bearers elected are Rupesh Prabhu Dessai (vice president), Harischandra Kholkar (secretary), Nandukumar Kholkar (joint secretary), Mukesh Velip (treasurer) and Praveen Prabhu Dessai (joint treasurer).

Besides, sub-committees for various activities involved during the Ganesh festivities were also elected under chairmanship of Suresh N Velip (Pooja Samiti, Rajesh P Dessai – Cultural Samiti), Atul Kokar (Decoration Samiti), Sudesh P Dessai (Mahaprasad Samiti), Narayan G Velip ( Visarjan Samiti) and H Kholkar (Prasidhi Samiti).

CALANGUTE: The Calangute BJP organised a free eye camp for the villagers of Calangute and surrounding areas at Calangute Association Hall, Calangute. A large number of villagers availed the benefits including free supply of spectacles. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo was the chief guest for the function, while BJP Yuva Morcha President Yeshwant Kandolkar, Calangute BJP Mahila Mandal Chief Ishika Haldankar, Parra Deputy Sarpanch Kamla Nigudkar, Calangute ZP Abeline Menezes and others were present. Dr Venkatesh K and Dr Geetisha Govekar enlightened the gathering on eye care. Lobo assured the gathering to bear the cost of any major surgery of the patients.

CANACONA: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) has announced results of selection test-2014 as declared by CBSE, New Delhi. In all, 78 students from South Goa District are eligible to take admission in Class VI at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Canacona, for the academic session 2014-15. According to JNV Canacona Principal S Kannan, out of 78 selected candidates, 20 students are from urban areas and 58 students are from rural areas of South Goa District. Kannan has requested the eligible candidates to contact the office.

mayem: Journalists along with social activist, environmentalist and youth observed a one-day fast in protest against the chaotic conditions repeatedly created by picnickers visiting the Chorla Ghat area. The fast started at 10 am and concluded at 5pm. “We organised the protest fast as the government has failed to curb traffic congestion, garbage and other problems created by the picnickers. The government should expedite action plan to solve the issue on priority basis,” said Parye Journalist Association President Nilesh Shetkar. Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant said Chorla Ghat is nature’s gift with beautiful waterfalls and mountains, but the picnickers are destroying the peace of the area. “I will take initiative to implement eco-tourism by involving locals in a disciplined manner,” he said. Bicholim MLA Naresh Sawal said he will raise the issue in the assembly session. The students of Bhumika HSS, social activist Vishvesh Parab, Rajendra Kerkar, forest officer Paresh Porob, Niraml Kulkarni and others were present for the one-day protest. A street ply was organised by Vivekanand Environment Brigade to highligh environmental issues.

CURCHOREM: Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral on Saturday undertook a special drive in the Curchorem market area to create awareness on market cleanliness. Cabral urged the shopkeepers and vendors not to throw waste on the road, but to gather it in polythene bags and keep in their shops, and that the team from private firm, Garbage Disposal Management and Technology (GDMT) supported by Cabral and others, would lift the collected waste every morning. He also asked them to contact him or his office if they have any excess waste to be collected during the day. Cabral requested the traders and the general public not to throw any paper or dry waste in the market or on the road but to put it in the recently installed roadside German model litter bins. Cabral said he has installed 13 litres bins in the Curchorem market. Cabral has also assigned the collection door-to-door garbage from the Curchorem constituency to GDMT, which will collect the garbage and then dumped it at the Cacora garbage disposal site.
