MARGAO: Close to three months after Vasco MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar took over as the Chairperson of the South Goa District Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA), the contract for the collection of sopo tax at the wholesale fish market is not even close to getting tender.
While Salkar, who met with PDA members on Tuesday, has assured that he would expedite the matter, he added that the Board still has to come to an agreement regarding conditions that are to be put in the tender, following which, the tender will be sent for government approval.
PDA members have asked for the conditions that have been placed by the Margao Municipal Council and Mormugao Municipal Council for the sopo collection within their jurisdictions, to be incorporated in the sopo tax collection tender of the SGPDA wholesale fish market as well. Salkar stated the Board would soon come out with a final list of conditions.
However, this will only delay the tendering process even though the High Court had instructed the previous SGPDA Board last year to float a tender for the sopo contract. The issue of the sopo tax collection has been the reason behind clashes between fish traders, the previous sopo contractor and SGPDA officials who have been collecting the sopo tax for the last few months.
