MARGAO: Taking objection to the manner in which the police handled the case of deputy collector and Canacona Chief Officer Prashant Shirodkar in the Canacona building collapse case, the Association of Goa Civil Service Officers has rallied behind the beleaguered officer by asserting that his arrest was unwarranted.
In a petition to the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Association reiterated that Shirodkar’s arrest was unwarranted and all possible action could have been taken against him without his arrest. It has made a fervent plea to the government to urgently free the officer from custody and not subject him to any further mental and physical torture.
“The Association is not commenting on the involvement of the officer in the collapse of the building. The Association takes objection to the manner in which the involvement of Shirodkar has been handled by the police. The question is whether there was any need for his arrest. Every suitable action could have been taken against him without the need to arrest the officer. As a result of the arrest, the officer has been subjected to immense mental, physical and financial strain”, stated Association Jt Secretary Levinson Martins, adding “we believe that Shirodkar, who was the deputy collector and sub-divisional officer, Canacona, and holding additional charge of the Chief Officer of Canacona Municipal Council would have cooperated with the police authorities or any government agency in the conduct of the inquiry without the need to arrest him.”
