BICHOLIM: Moved by the plight of the lesser fortunate section of society, an English tourist has been involved in philanthropic activities in different parts of Goa for about 10 years.
This year, her attention has been focussed on helping about 15 families from Latambarcem in Bicholim. On Sunday, Judi Jillard from England visited a remote village in Bicholim and offered assistance to residents in the area.
“Goa is very different from what the tourists usually experience. Goa is not just beaches but there are many things which are far more beautiful than this and one can find really see the beauty of the state in the villages,” Jillard told Herald.
Jillard, who runs a small business in her hometown, annually visits Goa and has been involved in charity work in the State for over 10 years.
“The charity that I do here in Goa is not a big thing and I donate something between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh. It gives me immense satisfaction and back home, I also urge others to do the same whenever they visit any country,” said Jillard.
“Last year, I had visited a remote village in Canacona and this year, it is Bicholim,” she said.
Incidentally, she is also being helped by Saligao Sarpanch Eknath Oraskar. “We feel that there is lot that can be done for people who are still living under poverty line and this is just a small thing that we can do,” said Oraskar.
About 15 families from Dhangar community reside in Sawardhat, a remote area in Latambarcem.
“There was no proper road some years back and all people were living in huts. However with the help of the government we were able to provide them with the houses, electricity and water connection,” informed Panch Babanrao Rane.
