PORVORIM: Thousands of people from Mapusa and surrounding areas converged on the streets of Mapusa on Tuesday evening to witness the Carnival floats parade.
The Carnival floats parade which was supposed to start from the Milagres Church at 4 pm started at 4.35 pm. The parade was flagged off by Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza in the presence of Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo and Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar.
According to figure provided by the members of Mapusa Carnival festival celebration committee, in all, 67 floats entertained the crowd along the streets under security cover, portraying several topics ranging from customs and traditions, environment, wild life, village life, etc.
The floats parade which started at Milagres Church culminated near Bodgshwar Temple late in the evening.
The floats in the traditional category evoked good response from the huge crowd. The institutional floats succeeded in entertaining the crowd. The Carnival procession received overwhelming response with the streets filled with spectators on either side of the route, due to which the floats faced difficulties in wading through the streets.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Serafin Dias, Police Inspector Tushar Verlekar and other police officials maintained security arrangements. Buses proceeding from Panjim were halted near Bodgeshwar temple due to which the passengers have had to walk a considerable distance to the KTC bus stand.
