VALPOI: A tiger was found dead at Golavli village in the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary in Sattari on Sunday.
Valpoi Forest Department officials said the tiger carcass was some four to five days old and said that the post-mortem would reveal the exact cause of death.
The Forest Department, Valpoi has booked a case under Wildlife Protection Act.
Renowned environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar said, “The tiger has died due to poisoning. And the tiger has been dead for the last few days. So the post-mortem cannot reveal the exact cause of death. But on seeing the carcass it looks like the tiger died due to consuming poison.”
According to Golavali villagers, a tracker trekking in the forest in Golavali village noticed the dead tiger and informed the villagers who in turn informed the Forest Department.
During the last tiger census, the presence of big cat was reported in the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, with experts claiming these were ones travelling from nearby Bhimgad and Hanshi-Dandeli sanctuaries.
People said a buffalo was found dead in the village some days ago, and this confirmed the presence of a tiger in the vicinity.
