PONDA: Ponda locals, like people across the State, are fed up with the scorching temperatures and hot and humid conditions and are waiting desperately for the rains. Preparation for the monsoon season is in full swing and can be seen in rural areas of Ponda where work such as repairing tiles, covering the house with plastic, storing wood safely are underway.
The markets in Ponda too are abuzz with activity as people are looking for various types of rainwear and protective gear. “ The summers were hot and it still quite unbearable in the day and a drop in temperatures will be a huge relief for us,” said Ponda president Shankar Naik, adding that respite from the heat through pre monsoon showers is what locals are eagerly waiting for.
Other residents have pointed out that as compared to the previous years; there would be some amount of pre-monsoon showers by this time, which would just bring about pleasant cool weather conditions. However, they feel that this year, although there have been clouds and the occasional thunder, the pre-monsoon showers seem to have missed Ponda with Margao and other parts having at least experienced little rain.
Locals have also expressed concerns that with schools set to commence on June 6, the conditions will get even worse if the monsoons are delayed further.
