Tourist Police Praised for Swift Action: Three Olive Ridley Turtles Rescued

The Tourist Police Unit (TPU) stationed at Colva Beach rescued three distressed Olive Ridley sea turtles on the evening of June 2nd, 2024.

Head Constable Namdev Mandrekar (HC-5844) and Police Constables Tanvesh Naik (PC-9544) and Saiesh Naik (PC-9493), while on patrol duty around 19:30hrs, noticed the turtles struggling in the shallow waters near the shore. Without hesitation, they swiftly sprang into action and rescued two of the turtles.

Simultaneously, lifeguard Satish Gaonkar intervened and rescued the third turtle, ensuring its safety. The Tourist Police promptly alerted the concerned authorities of the Forest Department about the rescue operation.

Following protocol, the rescued turtles were handed over to forest department officials, with Krupaksh Fatto, a forest guard, receiving them for safe custody and further necessary action.

The Tourist Police’s timely intervention and collaboration with lifeguards and forest department officials have been applauded by locals and conservationists alike. This rescue operation underscores the importance of community involvement in protecting endangered species and preserving marine biodiversity.
