MARGAO: A group of tourists from Tamil Nadu on Wednesday learnt the bitter lesson for disposing off their waste in the open fields along the National Highway.
Angry local residents stopped the tourist bus from heading to their destination and made the occupants to collect all the plastic carry bags strewn in the adjoining low lying fields and roadside before they were allowed to proceed with their journey.
The incident occurred at Sirlim on the NH-17 when a local Chinchinim resident Benny Da Costa found the tourists disposing plastic carry bags along the road sides after their meal. Taken aback by the development, an irate Benny stopped the bus and made the tourists collect the plastic bag and carry them in the vehicle.
Caught on the wrong foot, the tourists were seen in the fields collecting the plastic bags, which they later stored in their vehicle, before continuing with their journey.
Benny called upon the government to come out with a policy to ensure that tourists do not litter the roadsides during their visit to the state. “We find most tourists cooking and eating on the road sides, leaving the litter behind. The government should work out a solution to the issue before things go out of hand,” he demanded.
