PANJIM: Police booked 5863 cases of traffic violations during the fortnight long campaign against using mobile phones, overspeeding, drunken driving and use of vehicles with tinted glass.
DySP Traffic Dharmesh Angle said since January to April this year, 1213 motor vehicles accidents were reported wherein 97 people lost their lives. “In order to prevent accidents and loss of precious lives, apart from regular enforcement, a special drive against using mobile phone, overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and using vehicles with tinted glass was conducted for two weeks.”, he added.
The drive was held from May 3 – 18. During this time, traffic police booked 276 cases of driving using mobile phones, 544 cases of overspeeding, 519 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol and 4524 cases of vehicles using tinted glass were booked.
“While initiating action against tinted glass vehicles it was ensured that the filming of the windscreen and the windows were removed forthwith and the motorists were advised not to use the same, “ Angle added.
He requested the public to follow traffic rules and maintain safety norms and to cooperate with traffic police in making Goan roads safer.
