In a tragic incident, a pregnant mother and her child passed away after doctors at a hospital in Mumbai performed a Caesarian delivery using only a cellphone torch as there was a power outage. Adding to the shock, this occurred at a facility run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which boasts a massive budget of over ₹52,000 crores, with health allocation at ₹6,250 crore, constituting 12% of the total.
The victim was a 26-year-old woman, Sahidun, wife of Khusruddin Ansari, a specially-abled individual without a leg. The victim’s family had admitted the victim to the Sushma Swaraj maternity home for delivery. The family alleges that the hospital experienced a power outage, lasting three hours, during which the generator remained inactive. Shockingly, even after the tragic loss of the mother and child, another delivery was conducted in darkness.
Narrating the harrowing ordeal, a family member recounted the events leading to the devastating outcome. Despite assurances of a normal delivery, the situation quickly turned dire which resulted in the doctors using a phone torch during the C-section procedure. Tragically, the child did not survive, and despite assurances of the mother’s survival, she too succumbed before reaching Sion Hospital as the current hospital was unable to provide any treatment.
Outraged family members have been staging protests outside the hospital, prompting the BMC to initiate an inquiry into the matter. Photographic evidence provided by the family depicted another delivery taking place under similar circumstances, underscoring the alarming lack of adequate facilities and care at the hospital.
