About 750 truck drivers participated in the rally that began from Karapur and passed through Sanquelim town and culminated at PHC Sanquelim. The drivers demanded that they should be compensated just as truck owners are.
Union leader and Shiv Sena Chief Ajitsingh Rane demanded that the government give a minimum of Rs 5 lakh as compensation to every family. “The BJP had promised about Rs 102 crore for the truck drivers but not a single penny came out from the government’s treasury to help the truck drivers who were rendered jobless,” Rane said.
Rane also came down heavily on the government for the false promises given to the people and mining affected families. He asked the government to solve the issues of the truck drivers within a week or face an agitation.
Sanquelim Municipal Council chairman Dharmesh Saglani extending support said the government is only claiming that mining would soon resume. “We have never heard the mining companies and their owners saying that mining would resume in the State. This only proves that government is trying to fool the people by giving false assurances,” Saglani said.
