MARGAO: Social activists on Saturday morning stopped trucks transporting mud from the Sonsodo waste dumping site to the Nuvem bypass.
They complained that the transportation has not only left the Curtorim-Margao road slippery, but has relegated behind the contentious issue of scientific capping of the Sonsodo waste dumping site.
Activist Raju Aiyar demanded to know from the government the fate of the Sonsodo capping project. Reminding that capping of the site was to take place with the mud excavated from the Sonsodo hillock, Aiyar said while the mud is now being transported for the Nuvem bypass, nothing is heard from the Margao Municipal Council on the capping proposal. “The authorities seems to have shown undue haste in taking away the mud from Sonsodo for the Nuvem bypass. But, we citizens staying close to the vicinity of the waste dumping site are suffering from foul odour and flies”, he said, while demanding from the authorities the status of the capping proposal.
A PWD official at the site explained that a water tanker and workers have been deployed at the site to clean up the road of any mud and debris.
