PERNEM: Even after three years of the tragic incident in which four school students lost their lives after drowning in a laterite quarry pit filled with rain water at Tuem, the government has taken no steps to make these pits secure.

The incident occurred in September 2019. However, a 12-year-old and a 25-year-old too have lost their lives due to drowning in pits in two different incidents in the last five years.
The authorities have turned a blind eye towards the issue because even after three years, the authorities have failed to fill even a single quarry. Forget about barricades, authorities have even failed to install sign boards with a warning.
Uday Mandrekar, ex-panch of Tuem panchayat said, “Government did not learn any lesson from the tragic incident that had taken place three years ago since there is no positive result especially that pit where the four students had drowned is still not secured. We request the authorities to take serious note of this issue and initiate action to secure these pits.”
