VALPOI: Students from Surla Sattari Government High School have been boycotting classes for the past three days demanding completion of a new school building.
The students claim that the government is not at all serious to get the new building completed. Due to the shortage of place for the students of Std V to X, the government had started constructing a new building under the Sarva Shiksha scheme. Work had commenced in 2008 but the building is yet to be completed. The authorities were forced to conduct classes in a rented building for the last seven years, but unfortunately the owner has stopped the school from using his premises.
For the past one year locals along with the school headmaster and panchas were after the authorities to get the building completed. However, the PWD department from Valpoi has not supported their efforts, the locals claimed.
When the school reopened after the Summer vacation, the students were welcomed by heavy rains at school. Rain water began seeping through the walls and open spaces putting the students into inconvenience. Their requests falling on deaf ears, the students decided to boycott classes hoping that their action would attract government’s attention. But till Tuesday there was no response from the authorities, said local panch Suryakant Gaonkar.
