VASCO: The road near the Vasco vegetable market has turned into a nightmare for motorists and pedestrians, as a stretch of almost 25 metres of the road is full of potholes.
Speaking to Herald, vegetable vendors and motorcycle pilots said two scooter riders were injured while negotiating the potholes last week. While one badly bruised his leg, the other sustained fracture to his hand.
“Both the scooter riders had a lucky escape, as other motorists try to negotiate the potholes at a slow speed. This is an accident-prone area and many have lost their lives in accidents,” informed Rock Dias.
“The PWD and traffic department have turned a blind eye towards the pathetic condition of the road, due to which minor accidents take place,” alleged Dias.
It may be recalled that on July 27, former minister and Vasco MLA Jose Philip D’Souza along with his supporters and other citizens had organised a mock tree plantation drive in the potholes, prompting PWD to repair the road. However, the relief to public was only for a week and soon the road at the vegetable market was back to its pathetic condition.Speaking to Herald, D’Souza said neither the PWD nor the government is at loss if someone dies in an accident due to the pathetic condition of the road at the vegetable market, but it is the family members of the deceased who have to bear the loss throughout their lives.“I am going to file a PIL in the High Court making the PWD and other authorities party to my PIL over the pathetic condition of the roads,” he said.
