PANJIM: The government is likely to hand over the Vasco rape case to the Central Bureau of Investigation, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told media Wednesday.
“The state police have tried their best, but CBI can investigate the case from a wider angle,” Parrikar said and informed he had marked the file to the CBI. However, he cautioned that it would take at least four to five days before all the formalities could be completed.
Government officials however said that they had not received any orders and added that in case it was to be sent to the CBI it would have to be notified first.
It may be recalled that an NGO ~ People Against Atrocities And Injustice ~ had recently demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI.
The shocking incident in the toilet of a school had horrified the State and led to an outpouring of anger. However, despite efforts the police are not able to crack the case and the government had come under severe pressure from the civil society.
The NGO at their meeting had produced data on such cases in this year alone. The police registered eight cases of rape on minors, including two on school children and two on mentally challenged. There were 26 molestation cases out of which 24 were against minors and two against adults. There were four cases of sodomy and 18 kidnapping cases.
