PANJIM: Transport Department has issued a show cause notice to Vedanta Ltd, involved in manufacturing of pig iron, to pay Rs 30.80 crore towards cess on coal and coke transportation within the next 15 days, failing which action would be initiated. The cess from the company is due from 2006 to 2016.
An order issued by Assistant Director Transport (Enforcement) Sandeep Dessai, pointed out that Vedanta Ltd is procuring and transporting large quantity of coke and coal and the material is liable for assessment and payable for cess under the Goa Rural Welfare Cess Act 2000.
“In exercise of powers in Goa Rural Improvement & Welfare Cess Act 2000 & Rules made there under, Vedanta is liable to pay cess on the coal and coke procured by them,” the order states.
It said that a notice was served to the company on November 24, 2016 for payment of cess for the period from January 2006 to March 2016, during which 4.68 million tonnes of coke were transported.
The company has been directed to pay an amount of Rs 30,80,02,450, which is liable towards cess on coal and coke to the govt.
“You are therefore directed to show cause within 15 days in receipt of this notice, failing which department shall be compelled to initiate action against the company to recover the same as per law in force.”
