PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has insisted on tenant verification considering that most of the offences reported in the State are committed by non-Goans, temporarily living in Goa.
On Friday, Sawant held a crime review meeting with officers of the rank of deputy superintendents of police, SPs and Inspector General of Police, in the wake of the recent spike in offences across the State.

With a majority being outsiders involved in crimes, the Chief Minister said that police verification of tenants is compulsory to track a criminal while it will also enhance security of the premises.
In its latest ongoing tenant verification drive, Goa Police has completed 30,000 verifications.
“Not only should the tenants, people also get their servants verification done through police. Maximum crimes are committed by outsiders living in Goa. People are welcome to Goa but there are also visitors who come here with an intention to commit crimes,” the CM told the media after chairing the meeting at police headquarters on Friday evening and sought for people’s cooperation to curb crimes in Goa.
Sawant further said that the State government will introduce reforms in the old police laws that will be shortlisted, and sent to the Advocate General for legal opinion before implementation.
Sawant further stated that government will soon begin e-policing so that people can submit their complaints online.
Sources told Herald that the CM was briefed about a rise in detection even as the State saw a spike in cases in the last couple of days. “The crime scene was on a decline owing to COVID-19 pandemic. However, the recent spate of crime is not a rise compared to 2017 or 2018. Moreover, the detection rate has been good,” sources said.
The CM asked the department to introduce innovative ideas in policing while also directing to ensure that tourists are not subjected to unnecessary harassment. “If the tourists are on the wrong side of the law, they need to face police action but otherwise they should not be harassed,” he said.
Awareness on cyber crime was also discussed with emphasis on modernisation of the cyber crime cell.
To crack down on drunken driving, CM assured to provide additional alcometers to the police.
