MARGAO: Coloured waste-laden plastic bags which have been lying uncleared along the national highway-17 have become an eyesore.
Right from Cuncolim to Margao and beyond, one comes across bundles of coloured plastic bags containing waste. The highway seems to have been finally cleared of the plastic waste and litter, but the disposal of the accumulated waste is a big question.
A resident of Navelim, Martin Costa, told Herald on Friday that the plastic waste collected by the contractor should be disposed off without delay. He fears that unscrupulous hotel contractors may take advantage of the plastic waste-laden bags and dispose off gunny bags at the site.
Incidentally, some of the plastic bags were found torn near Dovondem a few days ago after strays tried to feast on the waste. However, it was disposed off by the contractor before the entire place could be dirtied.
Sources in the know said the responsibility of collecting and disposing of the plastic waste collected along the NH is now handled by the Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation. As per the guidelines, the contractor is required to collect the waste from South Goa and hand it over to the handicraft shed at Cacora for bailing, but with a condition that only dry plastic waste is brought at the site.
