India stands 127th in quality of teaching: Kher

PANJIM: Governor of Goa Bharat Vir Wanchoo on Friday urged a gathering of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Young Indians (Yi) to “fail fast, fail cheap” in a bid to push innovation.
Speaking at the annual day function of the Yi Goa Chapter, Wanchoo quoted former President of India Dr A P J Abdul Kalam in his bid to encourage young Indians to innovate.
“My message, especially to young people, is to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed,” the Governor said quoting verbatim from Abdul Kalam’s speech.
Touching on the issue of Youth in Governance which was the theme of the Annual Day, Wanchoo said that it was young India that was today dictating terms to governments. “The clamour for good governance come from the young people and good governance has become a buzzword, which is far away from the sectarian politics that this country hitherto has witnessed,” Wanchoo said.
Earlier in his speech Wanchoo highlighted some of the iniquities that plagued the nation including hundreds of millions of people living below the poverty line, without access to classrooms and tens of thousands of children engaged in child labour.
Earlier, Anil Kher the immediate past chairman of the CII Goa Chapter, in his speech highlighted problems in the education sector, especially that of lack of accountability among teachers.
“Primary teachers are being paid Rs 30,000 a month. College lecturers are being paid close to a lakh. But teachers do not spend even ten minutes reading a book before they go to teach. While abroad, lecturers who have even written books spend about eight hours preparing for a two-hour lecture,” Kher said adding that India came 127th out of 128 countries when it came to quality of teaching.
The function was held at the Reis Magos Heritage Precinct.
